An Introduction
Hi! you may have seen my name on articles, Bobby has been
inaccurately flattering me, and now apparently some people are
wondering who the heck i really am, so, i am under orders from a
mysterious "Number 1"...This is me, Ellyn Eddy:
I am 14 years old and live in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, south of
Lansing a little. I have two younger brothers, both with pet rabbits
that they have deeded over to me. I am finishing up 8th grade, being
homeschooled. I dont have much to say about me that isnt rabbit
related. When asked what i do for fun i start listing various rabbit
activities. "Anything else?" Well, i write a little. I
would like to be--i am going to be, i hope, i writer, of fiction and
rabbit books. Last year i won BIS writing at our county fair, that
went on to win Honorable Mention at state fair. I am afraid that i
wont get that honor this year, due to having written 98% rabbit
articles and 2% creative writing this year. I really have to get back
into creative writing more...deadline for fair is in 10 days and i
have nothing even started. :P
Rabbits intrest me more. I got my first rabbit, an opal mini rex
buck, in the spring of 2002. I was 11, and ridiculously horse-crazy,
or so i thought. Everything was horses. We didn't have a horse, but i
wasted sooo much money on riding lessons (really regreting that now
that i really have something worth spending it on!), horses were all
i read or talked about. So, instead of a horse, Mom thought to give
me a rabbit. A RABBIT! "yeah, sure, whatever mom, but how 'bout
a horse???" She started telling me to "think rabbit."
I thought she was crazy. Now she thinks i am crazy, and she may be
right. Well the original intention was to get one rabbit for showing
in 4H. When i asked mom about breeding bunnies, i got the
"no" in the forget-it tone. Then we discovered that my
brothers castor "buck" was a doe (but they were housed
seperately). I have no clue how it happened, how the magical
transition was made, but soon we were not only thinking about
breeding--we were planning on it! Just for fun ya know, just once...
We never did breed our mini rex, but soon i was looking for my first
pair of Polish. I cringe as i remember telling people "We just
want 4H quality". Well the 4H part got dropped amazingly
quickly. I now have a 30 hole ARBA registered rabbitry. I got my
first Polish, a black doe, from Seth Baareman and my fist buck, a
chocolate, from Drew Bliss. I now have black, chocolate, and broken
Polish. Last November i got a pair of black Silvers. (no, not silver
foxes, SILVERS!) This is a rare breed and i am looking forward to
building up my silver herd and promoting them. Polish are my first
love, though. I chose Polish for a single reason: the picture of the
little black in the Standard of Perfection stole my heart. (So at our
first show, i wanted one just like it. Due to the brown footpads, i
thought it was (for some reason) otter-colored. And, oddly enough i
thought it was called chocolate. (duh!!!) just then the chocolate
Polish sr does class was called, and it was like "That's just
what i want!" then we find this table with a bunch
of brown rabbits, its like...hmm....)
I am a member of the ARBA, MI state RB youth A, National Silver Rabbit Club, HPRC, Rosebud Rabbit Club, and Winning Combination 4H club. I am the Secretary and rabbit teen leader of my 4H club, and i am looking forward to getting more involved in MSRBYA in the coming months. I have written articles for the newsletters of every club i am a member of. I am the secretary of Rosebud Rabbit Club. RRC is a very uniqe club that i founded last year. We are not ARBA chartered, nor affilliated with any other orginization: we're an independent club. Most members are from this area. The majority of the members are pet owners, however my special ambition is to get them all into raising show rabbits. I edit our newsletter, and we hold contests such as "rabbit of the quarter". I am being considered to be accepted as a member of the new National Silver Rabbit Club promotional comittee. Actually i just emailed the person today...havent heard back yet. I designed the Rabbit Activity Booklets series myself, and now sell them nation wide through Domestic Rabbits and online advertising. I love doing Breed ID. I have been the ionia county Intermediate Breed ID winner for 2 years out of two. I am studying to make a Michigan team going to Indy. This will be my first convention and i am excited to an extreme. Hope to see you all there if not before!!!
Ellyn
{A few years ago in 2003 at East Lansing Michigan a quiet young man with a quieter daughter introduced her to me at a show, she was looking for Polish Rabbits. The dad made the little girl ask the questions and it made a big impression to me. That day we had about 87 Polish in Open and it was one of the bigger shows we had ever been a part of as at that time polish in michigan were around 20-30 at a show tops. It was a special day for me as two of my BESTEST rabbit showing partners Chris Campbell and Mike Schutz were BOTH there. Usually I showed against one or the other, but this time i had both of my friends at the show, and we for the first time beat mike schutz's great buck "Spot". Who i think has around a hundred cazillion legs or MORE :)
I remember the judge being a smarty and reversing the way he put the rabbits into the boxes and got to me and mikes and made a negative comment about our (fearing) last 2 placed rabbits. THEN he surprised us both by starting eliminating rabbits from the other end. Now back to Ellyn she is a wonderful young lady with a big heart and i hope you all accept her into the heartland family, the way the George family has accepted her in to ours. People like this are what makes this hobby worth it. With a day like that and a tiny girl staying so fresh in my memory shows the eddy family is a quality family and a bright spot in our hobby! Thank You, Please support her with an interview for us!
