Brendan and Janice Moore
HPRC members greatly value our charter members from South Bend, IN, Brendan and Janice Moore. Here from the start, Brendan served as one of our first directors and Janice has always been our capable VP. In fact, it was at their home show in South Bend that talk of an "Indiana Polish club" began. What a great idea that became!! Janice also embroiders our awesome patch!!! see it at www.heartlandpolish.com if you haven't already!
Brendan was born, raised, and has lived his whole life in South Bend. As a boy he was involved in Boy Scouts and was a newspaper carrier. The highlight of his childhood came when he was 16. As a carrier for the South Bend Tribune, he entered a nationwide contest sponsored by the Parade Magazine. Brendan won. Since at that time he had no rabbits to keep him at home, he was able to spend two of the best weeks of his childhood with 200 other carriers in Germany and Romania.
In the late 70's Brendan became involved in Civil War reenacting. This hobby once brought him to Green Bay, WI, where "I asked a certain woman to dance and ended up with a wife". Brendan and Janice had a Civil War wedding and were actively involved in Civil War reenacting for ten years. They even started a business that sold Civil War gear and merchandise to fellow resonators and the public. The best of it was in July of '88, when Brendan and Janice and 50,000 others took part in the Gettysburg 125th anniversary reenactment. Brendan was one of the 20,000 soldiers on the battlefield and, in his words "It was Fantastic!" I personally would have loved to see it! (but sorry i forgot to ask if he got "killed"!) ;-)
The Moore's most important hobby (you know what that is), had its start when Brendan and Janice's daughter, Sarah, was just shy of ten years old. Brendan was mowing his aunt's yard when he saw a little lost domestic rabbit running loose. He brought the bunny home. That rabbit musta had mights or something...anyway the whole family came down with a bug, got bit by a bug, the rabbit bug! Soon after that first rabbit had a run-in with the dog, the Moores acquired four wannabe New Zealands ("New Zealands, yeah right" said Brendan) from a pet owner who "Couldn't keep my two rabbits apart and i didn't know my girl rabbit was pregnant until she had babies". Later Sarah was given their first purebred, a Champagne D' Argent. The Champagne was rather large for her to handle, so they decided to get a smaller breed. In a rabbit book Brendan saw a Polish, and decided to get one, thinking it'd be neat since some of his ancestors were from Poland. At a 4H swap meet the met Mike Barns with some "Little Aristocrats" for sale, and the Moores brought home a chocolate senior buck. The Moores had not yet ever been to a show, never bred they're rabbits, "we had very little idea what we were doing at this time", but one day, driving down the road, they saw a sign...the dreaded sign...RABBITS FOR SALE. They had to stop...it was their fate...
The people happened to be selling, among other breeds, Polish and Champagne d'Argents! The Moores left with a Champagne buck and a Polish Black Junior Doe. Thus, the rabbitry known as Moore Rabbits had its beginnings. The Moores met Anita Hostetler of Niles, MI, whom they appreciate selling them many rabbits over the years. Anita invited them to a rabbits showmanship contest. They came, watched, learned, and Sarah joined 4H. She did very well in Showmanship for her first year, winning Princess at the county fair then going on to state fair, where she took 15 of (aprox) 40! Wow!
Now Moore Rabbits raises black, chocolate, broken, and BEW Polish, and Champagne d'Argents. Sarah also has a Holland Lop and a Standard Chinchilla. Janice at one time raised Jersey Wooleys but had to give them up due to allergies. Sarah is now in college after participating in 4H and rabbits for 10 years. Her brother Nate has completed 8 years of rabbits/4H. Brendan and Janice are members of the ARBA, River Valley Rabbit Club, and, of course, our Heartland Polish club. Brendan and Janice show in open when they can. They have been to several Polish national shows and an ARBA convention in Peoria, IL. They, with the rest of us, are looking forward to the 2005 ARBA convention in Indy this October!
Thank you, Brendan and Janice, for your service to the HPRC!!
